The Harms of Envy

Question: May Allah be pleased with you! This is a question from Abu Abdullah who said, “Some people talk about other people and are envious of the merits Allah blessed them with. What is you advice for these people?

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih Al-‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) answered: My advice for these people is to fear Allah (‘azza wa jal — mighty and majestic) and to beware of envy; for indeed envy eats up good deeds just as fire eats up wood. Envy does not benefit the envious person except in worry and distress because every time they find that Allah blessed the person of whom they are envious, the fire of envy rekindles in their heart and they try to be like this person. Then, surely envy is an objection to the decree of Allah because the person dislikes what Allah blessed someone else with. Furthermore, envy is hatred of others (of the envied), because usually the envious person strives to conceal the blessings of the envied, also slandering the envied and achieving that which they object. In addition, envy is form the manners of the Jews. Allah (ta’ala — the high) said,

“Many of the People of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) wish they could turn you back to disbelief after you have believed, out of envy from themselves [even] after the truth has become clear to them. So pardon and overlook until Allah delivers His command. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.” – Surah Al-Baqarah (2) : 109

Also, Allah (ta’ala) said,

“Or do they envy people for what Allah has given them of His bounty? But We had already given the family of Abraham the Scripture and wisdom and conferred upon them a great kingdom.” — Surah An-Nisa (4) : 54

Allah (ta’ala) said,

“And do not wish for that by which Allah has made some of you exceed others. For men is a share of what they have earned, and for women is a share of what they have earned. And ask Allah of His bounty.” — Surah An-Nisa (4) : 32

The Prophet ﷺ said, “Do not be envious.” In other words do not be envious of one another. Therefore envy is a dispraised and wicked trait. It does not happen except from weakness in one’s self, evil thoughts of Allah (‘azza wa jal), and hatred of the Muslims.

About Umm Abdulazeez

"I am a Muslim who is upon the Qur'aan and the Sunnah and upon the methodology of the Salaf As-Saalih (Pious Predecessors). And that can be said in short by saying, 'I am a Salafee' " [Shaykh Al-Albaanee رحمه الله] ________ Sufyaan Ath-Thawree (rahimahullaah) said: “Indeed knowledge should only be learned for the purpose of fearing Allaah. Indeed, knowledge has been given virtue over other than it because with it Allaah is feared.” [Jaam'i Bayaan al-'Ilm wa Fadlihi by Imaam Ibn Abdil-Barr (rahimahullaah)]
