Question: I committed a major sin from among the major ones, is the tawba enough for me or seeking forgiveness about it? [¹]
Shaykh Ibn Baz (rahimahullaah) answers:
Allaah expiates all sins by the sincere tawba including shirk, Allaah The Most Gracious says in the Al-Qur’aan: And all of you beg Allaah to forgive you all, O believers, that you may be successful. [²] and in suwra Al-Furqaan: And those who invoke not any other ilah (god) along with Allaah, nor kill such life as Allaah has forbidden, except for just cause, nor commit illegal sexual intercourse and whoever does this shall receive the punishment. The torment will be doubled to him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein in disgrace; Except those who repent and believe (in Islamic Monotheism), and do righteous deeds, for those, Allaah will change their sins into good deeds, and Allaah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. [³]
Allaah The Most Gracious informed us in this two verses that the polytheist and a killer who kills without right and an adulterer are sinners, his punishment is increased in the day of judgement and will dwell in hell forever EXCEPT for those who repent and believed or have faith and perform righteous deeds.
And the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him said): Tawba erases/nullify whatever (sins) before it, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): The one who repents from his sin is like the one who has no sin.
And the conditions of tawba an-nasuwh (sincere) which Allaah would expiates the sins by it are three:
1. To regret from whatever he did from among the offences and wrongdoings.
2. To leave and abstain from it because of the fear of Allaah and exalting Him.
3. Strong/genuine determination of not returning to it.
And there is a fourth condition for the validity of tawba, if the sin has something to do with the creation, such as killing or beating or robbing and its like, he should give back their rights or seeking their favorable consent/absolution of which he have done.
We ask Allaah to grant us and all the muslims the sincere repentance from all sins, verily He is the Most Generous.
