Busying oneself with his own Shortcomings

On the authority of Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, said: The Messenger of Allaah, may peace and blessings be upon him, said: “May toobaa be for the one whose shortcomings busies him from concerning himself with the shortcomings of others.” [Collected by al-Bazzaar with a good chain]

Sheikh Saalih ibn Fouzaan al-Fouzaan, may Allaah preserve him, says:

Toobaa is a tree in paradise that will be for the one whose shortcomings and deficiencies busies him from concerning himself about the shortcomings of others. He examines his own faults and corrects them and calls himself to account. He doesn’t busy himself with the faults of the people, forgetting about his own. The one who busies himself with his faults and forsakes busying himself with the faults of others will have this noble promise of toobaa which is a tree in paradise where it has been stated that a rider will travel under its shade for the distance of one-hundred years before passing through it, it has also been reported that toobaa is paradise itself.

This hadeeth (prophetic tradition) shows the nobility and virtue of the one who busies himself with his shortcomings and corects them and not with the shortcomings of the people. Consequently it shows the blameworthiness of doing the opposite; which is busying oneself with the mistakes of others while forgetting ones own.

About Umm Abdulazeez

"I am a Muslim who is upon the Qur'aan and the Sunnah and upon the methodology of the Salaf As-Saalih (Pious Predecessors). And that can be said in short by saying, 'I am a Salafee' " [Shaykh Al-Albaanee رحمه الله] ________ Sufyaan Ath-Thawree (rahimahullaah) said: “Indeed knowledge should only be learned for the purpose of fearing Allaah. Indeed, knowledge has been given virtue over other than it because with it Allaah is feared.” [Jaam'i Bayaan al-'Ilm wa Fadlihi by Imaam Ibn Abdil-Barr (rahimahullaah)]
