The path to a Happy Marriage

Question: How can one obtain a happy marital life? And what (advice) do you have for those people who are negligent and careless when it comes to divorce? Perhaps you may have some instructions O honorable Shaykh.

Sheikh ‘Abdul ‘Azeez ibn Baaz, may Allaah have mercy upon him, answers: There’s no doubt that it is obligatory upon both spouses to live with one another in kindness. Because Allaah, Mighty and Most High, says:

“And live with them in kindness.”[4:19]

So it is incumbent upon the husband to live with his wife in kindness and vice-versa. Both of them must live together in kindness. The husband must strive in doing this as well as the wife. Allaah says:

And they (women) have rights (over their husbands as regards living expenses, etc.) similar (to those of their husbands) over them (as regards obedience and respect, etc.) to what is reasonable, but men have a degree (of responsibility) over them. [2:228]

So they must exert themselves in speaking to one another politely, decent manners, refraining from saying that which isn’t befitting, refraining from hitting one another. They both must live in kindness at all times and speak with warm speech,  apply good manners and fulfill the obligations. The man must execute that which Allaah has obligated upon him from maintenance along with good speech and manners. Likewise the woman must submit herself to her husband and obey him in everything that is good and speak to him with that which is best.

She should not prevent him from his right, i.e. marital relations, that Allaah has legislated for him. They must cooperate upon the good and strive to have a wholesome marital life with one another and a lack of arguing and oppression.

With this the (marital) affairs will be corrected and upright. As for mistreatment or oppression along with a troubled relationship then the affairs will never become decent. We ask Allaah for safety.

About Umm Abdulazeez

"I am a Muslim who is upon the Qur'aan and the Sunnah and upon the methodology of the Salaf As-Saalih (Pious Predecessors). And that can be said in short by saying, 'I am a Salafee' " [Shaykh Al-Albaanee رحمه الله] ________ Sufyaan Ath-Thawree (rahimahullaah) said: “Indeed knowledge should only be learned for the purpose of fearing Allaah. Indeed, knowledge has been given virtue over other than it because with it Allaah is feared.” [Jaam'i Bayaan al-'Ilm wa Fadlihi by Imaam Ibn Abdil-Barr (rahimahullaah)]
