Question: There were a group of individuals in my country who collectively wronged me. However, Allaah has relieved me of my affliction and all praise is due to Him. Now I want to forgive them due to that which took place was something already decreed by Allaah, The Most High. So what is the best way you would advise me to go about it? May Allaah reward you with good.
Answer: If they have wronged you and you wish to forgive them, then you will be rewarded and you’ll recieve much good and virtue. Because Allaah, the Most High, said:
“And that you pardon is nearer to piety.” [2:237]
And the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: “Allaah does not increase a servant who pardons except in honor and nobility.” [Muslim]
“Whoever forgives and makes reconciliation his reward is with Allaah.” [42:40]
So with this being the case you are upon much good and if they wronged you by way of backbiting, in your wealth, insulting you, or anything other than that, and you forgave them then you will be rewarded. May Allaah reward you with good.
Questioner: In that case what is the procedure in doing so?
Shaykh Bin Baaz says: The procedure is that he informs them so that his pardoning of them is more complete, i.e. that he has forgiven them and that he does not request anything from them in return. If however, they wronged him as he mentioned and he does not inform them then this is also fine. The intent is forgiveness, therefore if he forgives then his reward is with Allaah.
