Shaykh: WaAlaykum As-Salaam wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barakaatuh.
Questioner: How are you, O our Shaykh?
Shaykh: May Allaah give you life, Aboo Moosaa.
Questioner: And may Allaah give you life, O Shaykh. Our Shaykh, I have a question, if you will permit it.
Shaykh: Go ahead.
Questioner: Is it legislated for a man who has a child to call the Adhaan in the ear of the child?
Shaykh: Is what legislated?
Questioner: (Repeats) Is it legislated for a man who has a child to call the Adhaan in the ear of his child at birth?
Shaykh: (Calling) the Adhaanat the time of birth is Mustahabb (recommended) according to most of the people of knowledge. It has come within a Hadeeth, however, within the chain of the Hadeeth there is (some) weakness. Nonetheless, the majority of the people of knowledge recommend it. So if one does it, there is no harm upon him and if he leaves it there is no harm upon him. From the actions of the Salaf who have passed is that calling the Adhaan (in the ear of the child) at birth was well known with them; so the majority of the people of knowledge deem it Mustahabb; and from the people of knowledge are those who say that it is not to be done because the Hadeeth (regarding it) is weak.
Questioner: May Allaah reward you with good, O Shaykh.
Shaykh: And you as well, Aboo Moosaa.
Questioner: May Allaah give you life, O Shaykh. As-SalaamuAlaykum
Shaykh: WaAlaykum As-Salaam.
